Over the last year, Mobile Labs has been busy evangelizing the benefits of mobile application testing automation and testing device management. We’ve attended dozens of conferences, participated in numerous symposiums, and had countless conversations with CIOs, application development teams and industry pundits.
Out of all of those discussions, there is one that sticks out. It was at Chetan Sharma’s Mobile Future Forward conference in September where I learned about the four phases of enterprise mobility. In my own words, they are:
What’s Mobile? Where the business becomes interested in mobile.
Mobile Something. The stage where companies begin to embrace mobility through one-off IT projects (e.g. creating a mobile website).
Mobile First. The stage where mobile is the primary focus for critical IT initiatives (e.g. developing internal and external facing apps).
Mobile Everything. Mobility is all that matters!
Currently, most enterprises fall somewhere between the “Mobile Something” and “Mobile First” categories – and that’s given rise to a rapidly changing ecosphere of vendors, devices, apps and users. The numbers bear this out. By the end of this year, there will be:
- 128+ MDM vendors
- 20+ mobile application development platforms
- 1.8 billion mobile phones (shipped)
- 184 million tablets (shipped)
- 102 billion apps downloaded
There’s no doubt that enterprise mobility has arrived, but it’s only been just recently that enterprise mobile application development has come to the forefront. In the last 6-12 months, the conversation has changed from “let’s do something mobile” to “mobility is top priority.” With most enterprises planning large-scale mobility initiatives in 2014, the demand for functional testing of mobile apps and devices is taking on newfound significance. The demand is quickly multiplying and accelerating in lockstep with mobility’s growth and deployment across the business, as well as with the new devices and OS upgrades being brought to market.
Those enterprises that have reached the “Mobile First” and “Mobile Everything” stages know firsthand that mobile app testing has become the linchpin between mobility ambitions and proven success. For this reason, companies are demanding mobile app and mobile website testing tools (such as those from Mobile Labs) that will begin, accelerate and continue their mobile journey. Tools that will:
- Expedite high-performance mobile application development and delivery
- Enable agile responses to changing mobile landscape
- Reduce complexity and cost
The Year of Mobile First is finally upon us, and companies’ mobile app testing capabilities will have a direct impact on the success of their mobility initiatives. Get ready!
